LETTERE su le terre odorose d'Europa e d'America dette volgarmente Buccheri, scritte alla signora Marchesa [Ottavia] Strozzi', [by Count Lorenzo Mazalotti of Florence]: eight letters on a collection of pottery made of scented clay, dated 5 July-20 Sept. 1695. Followed (f. 234) by two letters (on odours) from the same to Cavaliere Giovanni Battista d'Ambra; n. d. and 22 Sept. 1693. The two are printed as nos. viii, ix of Magalotti's Lettere Scientifiche ed Erudite, Florence, 1721 (repr. Venice, 1772). The eight letters to the Marchesa were first printed in Varie operette del Conte L. Magalotti, &c., Milan, 1825, p. 221. Between letters vi and vii are inserted several poems, viz.: (a) 'Al signor Marchese Gio.
(b) 'Poesie Toscane sopra i buccheri di Cile, di Guadalaxara, e di Nata, alla signora Marchesa Strozzi': four canzoni, eleven sonatti, thirteen canzonette, and three ' poesie ditirambiche', attributed here to various authors (real or fictitious). f. III. Ten of the poems are printed in Canzonette Anacreontiche di Lindoro Elateo pastore Arcade [the 'academic' name of Count L. Magalotti], Florence, 1723. The ascriptions as given here are:-
Maria Selvaggia Borghini. ff. 113, 133b, 156. Giovanni Lorenzo Francini (Canz. Anacr.' pp. 126, 100). ff. 159b, 163. Antonio Giovanetti. f. 132 b. Paolo Giovannetti (ib. p. 98). f. 153 b. Ottavio Mansili (ib. pp. 117, 92, 95). ff. 136 b, 143b, 145 b. Filippo Mei. ff. 133, 149. Ipolito Neri. f. 131. Abate [Francois Séraphin Regnier des Marais (printed in his Poesie Toscane, 1708, P. 71). f. 114. Canonico Antonio del Rosso. f. 146. Stefano Rossi. f. 134. Abate Antonio Maria Salvini. ff. 122b, 130, 130b, 142, 147, 147b. Vittorio Stamicari, V. F. f. 129 b. Giuseppe Gaetano Vastoso (Canz. Anacr. P.114. f.134b. Cammillo erzini (ib. pp. 96, 97, 98). ff. 152, 152b,153. Giuseppe Andrea Zuccherini. ff. 131 b, 132.
Two that are here anonymous (ff. 116b, 127) are attributed in other MSS. to Abate A. M. Salvini and Abate - Ciampelli respectively. Music, being the 'aria della Mea: frottola che cantano i ragazzi per le strade [di Firenze] nella state di quest' anno 1695', is added (f. 154 b) to the song ' Io le caua un bucchero' ascribed to Signor Paolo Giovannetti, but printed as Magalotti's. An additional song, 'Italia, poverella Italia mia'(Canz. Anacr., p. 30), is added (f. 146b) in another hand, which is also that of the headings and dates attached to the letters. There are a few annotations, of little consequence, on margins and blank leaves, and f 123 is a note by the vendor who wished to have had them continued 'se il Signore Pasquali non avra tanta fretta nè diffidanza'. This is presumably Giovanni Battista Pasquali, the compiler of the catalogue of Joseph Smith's library; and the annotator is named in the catalogue as Giuseppe Maria Manni. Other copies of the MS. are in Sloane MS. 2756 and Add. MS. 8791. The former contains an additional poem, La Bucchereide, by Dr. Bellini, which is mentioned on f. 123 b of this MS.
Paper; ff 270. Folio. 121/2 in. x 83/4 in. XVIII cent. Either this MS. or more probably its archetype seems to have belonged to Dr. Giuseppe del Papa (see f. 123 b). On f. 1 is the note ' Mandato da Bernardo Paperini,' and the name of Abate Andrea Mazzetti also occurs (ff. 2, 270 b). Belonged to Joseph Smith, Consul at Venice, Bibl. Smith., p. cclxxxiv, col. i. Half-bound in red morocco, marbled sides.
