'INSIGNIA ARMORUM augustissimæ Supremæ et Commilitonum prænobilissimi Ordinis Garterii, secundum eorum sedes in ecclesiâ collegiatâ regalis castri Windesorensis, quorum septem loca vacua conspiciuntur. 1602': arms in colours of the Knights of the Garter, dedicated to Queen Elizabeth by [Sir William Dethick,] Garter King-of-Arms. It is probable that two leaves (containing the arms of Charles Blount, Lord Mountjoy, Sir Henry Lee, Robert Ratcliffe, Earl of Sussex, and Henry Brooke, Lord Cobham) have been lost after f 9. This would make up the full possible number of twenty-six knights. Four stalls were at this time actually vacant, the other three 'loca vacua' being those of the Emperor Rudolph II, James VI of Scotland, and Frederick, Duke of Württemberg, who had never been installed and whose arms are not depicted. The knights, other than princes, are in order of election, and the spaces left blank are the 2nd, 4th-6th, and the last three. The arms are generally simple family coats without the elaborate quarterings shown in King's 408.
Vellum; ff. 12. 85/8 in.x 6 in. A.D. 1602. Purple velvet binding (with modern back) stamped with the arms of William III, to which the initials G. R. III have been added.
