'THE UNFORTUNATE FATHER and three sons, ever since the miserable times, 1642': an account by Capt. Thomas Orme of the misfortunes of his father, Capt. William Orme, of Hanch Hall, near Lichfield (d. 1666), and of himself, as set forth by him (aet. 76) in a petition to King George I. Signed. William Orme took part in the defence of Lichfield during the Civil War, was present at the battle of Naseby, was imprisoned at Rockingham Castle, and finally compounded for his estate. Thomas Orme was engaged in Sir G. Booth's rising in 1659 and became a Gentleman-Pensioner to Charles II. When quartered at Portsmouth in the Duke of Berwick's regiment in Feb. 1688 he refused to sign an address to the King and was tried by courtmartial and cashiered. He claims (f. 11 b) to have suggested the 'stamping the post-letters with the day of the month'. Prefixed (f. 1) is a 'Congratulatio humillima subditi fidelis ad Regem'.
Paper; ff. 29. Quarto. 71/2 in. x 51/2 in. Circ. 1715. Half-bound in calf, marbled sides.
