SCATTERGOOD COLLECTIONS. Vol. XXXII. Commonplace Book of Anthony Scattergood (b. 1611, d. 1687), theologian, containing poems in Latin, Greek, and English, recipes, academic exercises, etc.; n.d., but probably compiled while at Trinity College, Cambridge, 1632-1640. Autograph, except for two pieces at the end (ff. 120, 122b). For indexes of the contents see Add. MSS. 44964, ff. 57-60, and 42121, ff. 30-31b. Described by Herbert John Davis in 'Dr Anthony Scattergood's Commonplace Book', The Cornhill Magazine, N.S., liv (Jan.-June 1923), pp. 679-691 (proof copy in Add. 44964, ff. 86-92). Davis prints a few previously unpublished English pieces, together with a few others first printed in the anthology Wit's Recreations, 1640, while a number of other English poems were first printed from this MS. by W. C. Hazlitt, Inedited Poetical Miscellanies, 1870 (see below); the majority of the English poems, though in this MS. almost always unassigned, are well known. In the list below (not exhaustive), the MS. order is not followed, poems of known authors being given first:-

Coll. Camb. MS. R. 3.9. ff. 41-81b. Paper; ff. iv + 134. Octavo. XVII cent. Bookplate of Henry Huth (d. 1878) f. iii. Original vellum covers, the book being preserved in a leather wallet. On f. 130b is the inscription: 'Elisabeth Scattergood her Boke 1667/8.'
