SCATTERGOOD COLLECTIONS. Vol. XXXIV. Armorial of baronets of England created between 1611 and 1688, with painted arms, and notes, in some cases, of their successors and seats carried down to 1726. Made apparently by, or for, Holland Egerton (4th Bart. 1729), of Heaton, co. Lanc., antiquary (d. 1730), who refers to his compilation of such a work in a letter to Browne Willis, 28 Jan. 172,3/4, of which a copy, by William Cole, is Add. MS. 5833, ff. 168b-170. The achievement of his father, Sir John Egerton, 3rd Bart., is displayed as a frontispiece (f. 2b), and similar prominence is given (f. 17b) to that of Sir Verney Cave, 4th Bart., of whose grandfather, Sir Roger Cave, 2nd Bart., his wife Eleanor was a daughter. The work is uncompleted, and a paper template found in the volume, which was used to draw the outlines of the shields, is now bound as f. ii. Occasional supplementary notes have been made in later hands. Paper; ff. v + 94. Small folio. Circ. 1725. Bound in a contemporary vellum binding with a metal clasp. A printed slip with the legend 'Holland Egerton of Heaton in Lancashire Esqr.', found loose in the volume, is now bound as f. i. The MS. was acquired at a sale of the Earl of Wilton's books from Heaton Park by C. Richardson, bookseller, of Manchester, from whom it was bought by B.P. Scattergood in, or before, 1903, (see ff. iv, v).
