WILLIAM MORRIS PAPERS. Vol. XVI (ff. 33). Miscellaneous correspondence, etc., of or relating to Dante Gabriel Rossetti; 1861-after 1882. For his correspondence with Mrs Morris, see also Add. MSS. 52332, 52333. Included are:-
(1) Proofs of 'The Stream's Secret', 'The Love-Letter', 'Barren Spring', 'For "The Wine of Circe" by Edward Burne Jones', and 'The Monochord'; March 1870. Printed (16 pp.) with autograph revisions. Rossetti completed these five poems after proofs of the first edition of Poems, 1870, had been sent to reviewers, and had page proofs struck off in the present form. Revised proofs, of which an example is Ashley Library no. 1404 in the Department of Printed Books, were then also sent out to reviewers. For the numerous proof stages of Poems, 1870, see Janet C. Troxell, Colophon, N.S., iii, no. 2, Spring 1938, pp. 243-258, and the letters from Rossetti printed by T. J. Wise, Ashley Library, iv, 1923, pp. 114-131 passim. ff. 2-17.
(2) Letter from Rossetti to Mrs Morris, enclosing autograph copies of eight new stanzas for 'Sister Helen', first printed in the 1881 edition of the Poems; 1879 (?). Cf. Janet C. Troxell, Rossetti's Sister Helen, Yale, 1939, pp. 13-14. ff. 19-22.
(3) Letter from Rossetti to Mrs Morris, enclosing autograph copies of the three Beryl-songs for 'Rose Mary', cf. the description of Add. MS. 45352 preceding; Wed. [3 Feb.] 1880. ff. 23-27.
