PALGRAVE PAPERS. Vol. IX. Letters and poems, for the most part extracted from printed books formerly in the collection of Francis Turner Palgrave and given to the British Museum. Contents:-
(1) Letters (about 150), addressed mainly to F. T. Palgrave but including a few to his father, Sir Francis Palgrave, and his daughter, Gwenllian Florence Palgrave; 1831-1923, n.d. Arranged alphabetically. The names of the correspondents, who include eminent churchmen, statesmen, artists. writers and scholars, will be found in the Index to the present Catalogue. The letters of Browning (f. 28), George Cruikshank (f. 46), Longfellow (f. 135) and J. W. Mackail (f. 140), and that from F. T. Palgrave to Alice Ellen Terry (f. 169, copy), are printed by Gwenilian F. Palgrave in Francis Turner Palgrave: his Journals and Memories of his Life, 1899, pp. 94, 79, 160, 255, 261. ff. 1-244b. Henry Irving's letter at f. 115 is in the hand of Bram Stoker and signed by Irving.
(2) Poems, hymns, etc., by F. T. Palgrave; 1847-1883, n.d. Partly autograph. A few are printed in Hymns, 1870, and A Lyme Garland, 1874, but the majority appear to be unpublished. ff. 245-277.
(3) Five autograph poems of Alfred Tennyson, 1st Baron Tennyson 1884, given by him to Palgrave, 1854-1855, and removed from the latter's copy of the 1894 edition of Tennyson's Works. Two others similarly presented to him by the author were inserted by Palgrave into his copies of Tennyson's Poems (1853) and Enoch Arden (1864) now in the Department of Printed Books (press-marks C.60. k.13, 14). See K. W. Gransden, 'Some Uncatalogued Manuscripts of Tennyson', The Book Collector, iv, 1955, pp. 159-162. As follows:-(a) Maud, §xii ('Birds in the high Hallgarden'). Vv. 4 and 5 are transposed in the MS., which also has 'but sixteen' instead of 'not seventeen' in v. 5. ff. 278-279;-(b) Maud, §xv ('So dark a mind within me dwells'). Several minor differences from the printed text. f. 278 b;-(c) Maud, §xi ('0 let the solid ground'). A draft, with corrections, differing from the printed version. f. 279;-(d) Maud, §xiv ('Maud has a garden of roses'). Imperf., breaking off in the last verse after 1. 5. Two slight differences from the printed text. f. 279b;-
(e) 'Tears, idle tears', from The Princess, including the last three lines of narrative before the lyric. The latter begins originally in this MS. 'Ah foolish tears', but this has been deleted and 'Tears, idle tears' substituted. At f. 280 is a note by Palgrave authenticating the MS. Another autograph of this poem is in Ashley MS. 5111. ff. 281-282. ff. 278-282.
(4) Copies of poems of Tennyson, mostly in Palgrave's hand (see The Book Collector, as above), viz.:-(1) Eight poems copied from Poems (1833) and omitted or altered in later editions. ff. 283-290b;-(2) Early version of Maud, §xxiv ('0 that 'twere possible'), as published under the title 'Stanzas' in The Tribute, a collection of poems by various authors edited by the Marquess of Northampton, London, 1837, pp. 244-250. ff. 291- 293b;-(3) Poem, beg. 'June on many a flower reposes', dated at Freshwater, 9 Jan. 1855. Another copy is written on the back end-paper of Palgrave's copy of Poems referred to above (C.60. k. 13), where it is entitled 'Early verses of compliment to Miss Rose Baring' and stated by Palgrave to have been recited to him by Tennyson in 1854. f. 294;-(4) 'Ode sung at the opening of the International Exhibition, 1862'. In the hand of Emily Tennyson, wife of the poet.
