ETHEL SMYTH COLLECTION. Vol. V (ff. i + 213). 'Der Wald': opera in one act to a libretto by the composer, originally written in German and based on an idea of H. B. Brewster to whom the work was dedicated (C. St John, op. cit., p. 98; E. Smyth, What Happened Next, pp. 213-214). Full score dated'Midnight Oct 31./02' (f. 213b). The opera was composed in 1899-1901 and first performed in Berlin, 21 Apr. 1902 (C. St John, op. cit., pp. 305, 97; A. Loewenberg, op. cit., col. 1240, gives the date as 9 April). Published, in full and vocal score, by B. Schotts Söhne, Mainz, 1902. The corrections and cuts entered by the composer and Schott's engraver in the manuscript were incorporated in the published full score. The composer's attempts to get the work performed at London and Dresden, the difficulties of the Berlin première, and the successful revival at Covent Garden, 18 July 1902, for which the English translation entered in red ink in the manuscript was made, are described in What Happened Next, pp. 167-176, 189-205; C.
