ETHEL SMYTH COLLECTION. Vol. XVII (ff. i + 107). Sonata in A minor for violin and piano, op. 7. In four movements:-'Allegro moderato' (ff. 1-32b), 'Romanze' (ff. 33-39), 'Scherzo' (ff. 39b-44) and 'Allegro vivace' (ff. 45b-60). Score (ff. 1-60) and separate violin part (ff. 61-107). Completed 22 Mar. 1887 (f. 59b) and published the same year by J. Rieter- Biedermann, Leipzig. Most of the tempo and expression markings in red crayon in the manuscript have been incorporated in this edition but a number of variants in the musical text remain. The order of the second and third movements was reversed before publication, and the time values of the Scherzo reduced by one half. An Adagio opening (f. 45) to the Finale was not included in the published version. The sonata was first performed in 1887 by Adolf Brodsky and Fanny Davies at a 'Kammermusik' concert in Leipzig (E. Smyth, Impressions that Remained, ii, 1919, p. 162). See also C. St John, op. cit., p. 292.
