CORRESPONDENCE AND PAPERS of Vice-Admiral Sir Thomas Boulden Thompson, K.C.B., M.P., 1st Bart. 1806, Comptroller of the Navy, consisting chiefly of official and semi-official letters relating to naval affairs; 1786-1815. Included are:-(a) Admiralty Instructions to Thompson as commander of the expedition which established the colony of Sierra Leone; 20 Jan. 1787. f. 3;-(b) Official order, signed by Rear-Admiral Sir Horatio Nelson, K.B., instructing Thompson as Commanding Officer of H.M.S. 'Leander' to convey Capt. E. Berry, R.N., bearer of original despatches concerning the Battle of the Nile, to Lord St Vincent; 2 Aug. 1798. f. 80;-(c) Four autograph letters from Nelson, 1801-1803, the first of which, dated 12 Apr. 1801 (f. 115) and sympathizing with Thompson on his loss of a leg at Copenhagen, is enclosed (f. 116) in an undated wrapper addressed to Thompson aboard H. M. S. 'Isis' [i.e. during his return to England with the wounded] and is sealed with the signet which Nelson used only when writing to the Captains who had served under him at the Nile. ff. 115-116, 129, 130, 135;-(d) Autograph letter from Vice-Admiral Cuthbert Baron Collingwood, concerning the Battle of Trafalgar and describing his feelings of personal loss at Nelson's death; 18 Dec. 1805. f. 141;-(e) Autograph letter from Nelson to William Pitt, 11 Sept. 1805, recommending Thompson (to whom it was sent in March 1806 (cf. f. 143) by George Pretyman-Tomline, Bishop of Lincoln). f. 145.
