"Oratorio del Tempo e della Verità", apparently in the revised and rewritten form, in various hands, including suspected Handel's.
- Scope & Content:
-
ff. 131. ['II Trionfo] del Tempo e della Verità': Oratorio in three parts, for solo voices and chorus, with symphonies and accompaniments for flutes, oboes, horns, trumpets, drums, strings and organ, in score, by Handel. The words (as far as they go) and a considerable portion of the music are the same as those in the 1708 version. The numbers written for the present version [1737], but not incorporated in the English work of 1757, are printed at the end of vol. xxiv of the Händel-Gesellschaft's publications, with the exception of the sinfonia at the beginning of part ii, the air 'Folle dunque tu sola presumi' in part ii, and some of the recitatives. The first 93 folios appear to be in the hand of John Christopher Smith. In some numbers the words used in the English work are inserted over the Italian text.
For a further description of the MS., see the Catalogue of Additions, 1876-1881. [p.209].[‘ “Oratorio del Tempo e della Verità”, apparently in the revised and partly re-written form in which the work (originally composed in 1708) was produced in London, 23 March, 1737. With corrections in various hands in pen and pencil, generally of clerical errors. A few, eg. “uomo” f.43b, are probably by Handel. At f.126 appear the cancelled words “Segue Concerto per Lorgano e poi Hallelujah”; but the concerto is omitted. The two compositions, however, exist in sequence in Handel’s autograph, dated 25th March, 1735 (King’s MS. 317, f.37). On the relation of this recension of the work to the oratorio of 1708 see Chrysander’s preface to his edition of the latter (published for the Deutsche Handelgesellschaft, 1866) and also the analysis in his Life of Handel, vol. i. p.220. Paper; ff.131. xviiith cent. Folio. ‘]
