Ludwig van Beethoven: The Pastoral Symphony Sketchbook
A musical sketchbook chiefly made up of notes for the 6th (Pastoral) Symphony (Op. 68), here called 'Sinfonia caracteristica oder Erinnerungen an das Landleben'. On f. 2 is the note 'Man überlässt es dem Zuhörer sich selbst die Situationen auszufinden'. Of other works, notes appear at intervals, namely: of the 3rd Sonata for Piano and Violoncello (Op. 69) beginning with the second subject of the first movement (at the 37th bar) (f. 31v); of the 2nd Pianoforte Trio (in E flat) dedicated to the Countess Maria von Erdödy (Op. 70) (ff. 39r, 54v, 58v); of the lst Pianoforte Trio (in D) of the same set (Op. 70) (ff. 49r-60v); and of a Piano Concerto in F minor (f. 39r). Autograph. On f. 1, which forms a front cover, is the attestation 'Beethoven's eigenhändiger Entwurf seiner berühmten Pastorälsymphonie und einige andere Skizzen desselben Meisters. Zu Wien erhalten am 12ten September 1842 von Anton Graeffer. J. F. S. Gassner'.
- Scope & Content:
-
ff. 60. Sketch-book [by Beethoven], containing chiefly sketches for the Pastoral symphony. It is dated at the beginning 1808, and evidently belongs to the first half of that year. According to Gustav Nottebohm, who has given an account of the MS. in his Zweite Beethoveniana (pp. 252, 369, etc.), twenty-eight or twenty-nine leaves have been lost; two have certainly been cut out (between ff. 42 and 43) since the original numeration. Dr. F[erdinand] S[imon] Gassner of Carlsruhe received the MS. in Vienna from Anton Graeffer in 1842. For those portions which have been identified, see the Table of MSS., above.
ff. 1-18b passim Sketches by Beethoven, dated 1808 at the beginning, and containing principally the Pastoral symphony. For a description of the MS. see Gustav Nottebohm's Zweite Beethoveniana (pp. 252, 369, etc.).
f. 31b. Sketch of a few bars of the 3rd Sonata for pianoforte and violoncello (op. 69), by Beethoven. {cf. Lewis Lockwood, The Music Forum, vol II cont. F. Salzer, W. Mitchell, Columbia Univ. Press (forthcoming 1967).}
f. 39 Sketch of a few notes intended for a 'Concerto in F mo[ll],' by Beethoven.
ff. 39-60b passim. Sketches by Beethoven of portions of the following Trios for pianoforte, violin, and violoncello:— 1. In E flat. Op. 70, no. 2. ff. 39, 58b, etc. 2. In D. Op. 70, no. 1. ff. 49-60b passim.
