Materials: Paper and parchment (parchment folios are: ff. 126-127, 132-133). Watermarks include: a) a wheel (f. 25) similar but not identical to E. Heawood, Watermarks mainly of the 17th and 18th centuries (Hilversum, 1950), no. 4018, 4022, dated between 1504-1530; b) a human figure (f. 34), unidentified; c) a wheel (ff. 3-48), possibly identical to Heawood no. 4024; d) a crowned eagle (ff. 55, 58)?, unidentified; e) a hand (ff. 91-92), unidentified; f) a pot (f. 129), possibly identical to Heawood, no. 3555 (undated).
Dimensions: 297 x 220 mm (text space: 215-228 x 117-165 mm).
Foliation: ff. viii + 133 (f. 133 is a parchment flyleaf, other unfoliated flyleaves are paper): many 17th-century notes (passim, see ff. 8r, 34v, 35r, 79r, 128r) indicate that the manuscript is imperfect and an unknown number of leaves is missing; f. 119 is a fragmentary paper slip. Old pagination in ink '1-51' (ff. 1-26). Modern foliation in pencil and pen ff. '1-133' (ff. 31v, 34v, 36r, 48v-49, 108v, 119r, 126r, 133r blank).
Collation: Gathering not original (leaves rearranged by later binders in gatherings or single leaves, all mounted on guards): i12, ii-iii4, iv6, v-vi4, vii16, viii12, ix10, three single leaves, x2, six single leaves, xi2, xii12, xiii11, xiv10-1 (tenth cancelled), eight single leaves, two single leaves on parchment, four single leaves, xv2.
Layout: Inconsistent ruling in hard point and black ink for single columns of 25-40 lines.
Script: Cursive.
Binding: British Museum/British Library binding with the Harley arms and motto gilt-tooled at centre of covers.

John Molland, inscribed with his name, late 16th or 17th century (f. 74r).
Samuel Knott (d. 1687), Rector of Combe Raleigh, co. Devon, priest of Broad Hembury, co. Devon, his note signed 'S. Kanuto' (f. 8r).
Robert Burscough (1650/51-1709), prebendary of Exeter in 1701, archdeacon of Barnstaple in 1703, rector of Cheriton Bishop in 1705: acquired with other manuscripts by Robert Harley (1661-1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, from Burscough's widow on 17 May 1715, the date noted by Harley's librarian Humfrey Wanley (1672–1726), on f. 1r (for the negotiation preceding the purchase see Diary 1966).
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta, née Cavendish Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d.1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library. Harley shelfmarks '99.B.8 / 2269' in dark brown ink followed by '2 / IV D' in pencil (f. i recto).
