3. Petition of Anne Powell, widow of Richard Powell, of Forest Hill, co. Oxon, [aud mother of Milton's first wife,] to the Council of State, asking them to appoint some of their number to report on her case to Parliament, and mentioning Milton as mortgagee of her husband's lands; [1651 or 2]. With a copy of an order by the Committee " for Reliefs upon Articles of Warre," dated 12 June, 1650. ff. 43, 44. The order was printed by W. D. Hamilton, Original Papers illstrative of the Life and Writings of John Milton (Camden Soc., 1859), p. 82 ; but the petition does not appear to have been known to the editor, nor yet to Prof. D.
