In the preface the author states that the motive of his work was to correct certain misstatements in L'Ami des Hommes [by Victor Riquetti, Marquis de Mirabean, Paris, 1755]. He adds that he had lived 30 years in England in familiar intercourse with the most famous merchants and manufacturers, and had been introduced " dans toutes lenrs assemblées les plus respectables appellées Clubs," where he had used his opportunities as a political agent of the French Government from 1735 till his arrest and the seizure of his papers in Nov. 1750.
