TWENTY-SIX LETTERS from Charles Montague, Chancellor of the Exchequer [cr. Baron Halifax in 1700, and Earl of Halifax in 1714], to William Blathwayt, Secretary at War, etc., on the project of a Land Bank, the new Exchequer Bills, the difficulties of raising money, etc.; 29 May, 1696-15 Oct. 1697. The first letter begins: " Our great affair of the Land Bank is now come to some issue, and such a one as I am affraid will justifie all I have said or thought of that project; and .... I will trouble you with a short account of the proceedings, by which you may see that it had been very fortunate for England if I had been more beleived then I was." On 25 May, 1697, he writes (f. 27), " The Exchequer Bills do as well as could be expected from so new a thing under a great opposition, but wee are almost at the end of our Tedder in them, and how wee shall find remittances on any other fund is yet to be tryed." Included also (ff. 5, 9, 20) are drafts of three letters by Blathwayt in answer, dat. 11/21 June-31 Aug. 1696. Paper; ff. 60. Quarto.
