Volume of three works by Abraham Fraunce (1559?–1592/3?), poet and lawyer, partly in his hand. Dedicated to Edward Dyer (1543–1607), courtier and poet.
f. 2r: Title-page: ‘The Sheapheards Logike: conteyning the præcepts of that art put downe by Ramus; examples set owt of the Sheapheards Kalender; notes and expositions collected owt of Beurhusius, Piscator, Mr. Chatterton and divers others. Together with twooe general discourses, the one touchinge the prayse and ryghte use of Logike, the other concernynge the comparison of Ramus his Logike with that of Aristotle’. Addressed ‘To the Ryght worshypful mr Edwarde Dyer’. In Fraunce’s hand.
f. 2v: Fourteen-line poem beginning ‘Some arts wee bynde, to some one kynde of subject severallye’. Signed ‘Your Woorshyps, most humbly to bee commaunded Abraham Franse’. In Fraunce’s hand.
ff. 3r-28r: ‘The Sheppardes Logike’, beginning ‘The first Chapter of the first booke. What Logike is. Logike is an Arte of reasoninge well’. In two books. With quotations from Edmund Spenser, The Shepheardes Calender (1579), as examples.
ff. 29r-31v: ‘Of the nature and use of Logike’, beginning ‘Junius Florus by continual meditation for three dayes’.
ff. 32r-36r: ‘A bryef and general comparison of Ramus his Logike with that of Aristotle, to the ryghte Worshipful his verye good Master and Patron Mr P[hilip] Sydney’, beginning ‘Phormio by reporte, Righte Worshipful, was scoffed’.
