E[dward] Gibbon, the historian, to [his aunt Hester Gibbon], on his leaving England for Lausanne: " Your good wishes and advice will not, I trust, be thrown away on a barren Foil; and whatever you may have been told of my opinions, I can assure you with truth, that I consider Religion as the best guide of youth and the best support of old age"; Sheffield place, 30 June, 1788. f. 31. On the third page (f. 32) is a draft of a letter from Hester Gibbon to Lord Sheffield, in reply to one enclosed by her nephew. Presented by Miss Sarah Law.
