This manuscript is the second part of a two-volume Missal created for the Benedictine abbey of Stavelot. The first part is Add MS 18031. This volume was written in the first quarter of the 13th century and was supplemented by 15th-century material.
13th-century contents:
ff. 1r-2v: Ordo Missae (Order of the Mass), imperfect at the beginning: 'purifices interna cordis mei', ending: 'qui te constituit intercessorem pro peccatis nostris'.
ff. 3r-8v: A liturgical calendar, beginning: 'Iani prima dies et septima fine timetur'.
ff. 33v-34r are blank.
ff. 35r-124v: Temporal, including collects, prayers, lections, prefaces and Secrets for each feast.
ff. 125r-185v: Sanctoral, including collects, prayers, lections, prefaces and Secrets for each feast of Saints, beginning with the feast of St Tiburtius, St Valerian and St Maximus; ending with the mass for several Holy martyrs.
ff. 187r-226v: Votive masses, incomplete at the beginning: 'dixit mihi: Hi qui amicti sunt stolis albis'Various masses for priests, the bishop, friends, forgiveness of sins etc.
ff. 224v-226v: Masses for funerals
ff. 227r-231r: Benedictions, beginning with the benediction of pouches and staff, which is related to the pilgrim: 'Benedictio super peram et baculum. Domine Ihesu Christe fili dei vivi qui recto incedentibus itinere'; including other benedictions and exorcisms; ending with the consecration of a church (ff. 230v-231r).
ff. 231v-247v: Antiphons related to the Temporal (ff. 231v-238v), beginning with 'Alleluia in die resurrectionis mee dicit dominus precedam nos in Galilee' for the day of Easter; ending with 'Sancti Spiritus adsit nobis gratia. Que corda nostra sibi faciat' for Pentecost. Antiphons related to the Sanctoral (ff. 238v-247v), beginning with a chant for the Holy Trinity: 'Benedicta semper sancta sit Trinitas deitas'; ending with the chants for the dedication of a church 'Altissime Iesu Christe qui dignatus es munda'.
ff. 248r-250v: Excerpts from the Temporal, including collects, prayers, lections, prefaces and Secrets for each feast, beginning with the mass for the Sunday after the Ascension (f. 248r), beginning: 'Multitudinis credentium erat cor unum et anima una' followed by the mass for the second Sunday within the octave of Pentecost (ff. 248r-250v).
15th-century contents:
ff. 9r-22v: Proper prefaces for the liturgical feasts, beginning: 'Eterne Deus. Quia per incarnate verbi mysterium nova mentis nostra oculis lux tue claritatis infulsit'.
f. 23r: Chants and hymns, beginning with the 'Credo' and followed by 'Gloria in Excelsis Deo'.
ff. 23v-26v: Excerpt from a Temporal, including collects, prayers, lections, prefaces and Secrets (Secreta), the feast of the Holy Lance and Nails: 'In Festo lancee et clavorum domini nostri Ihesu. Foderunt manus meas et pedes meos dinumeraverunt'; including the chant 'Cibavit eos ex adype frumenti alleluia et de petra melle saturavit eos alleluia' (f. 25r) prefacing the mass for the feast of Corpus Christi (ff. 25r-26v).
ff. 27r-31v: Ordo Missae (Order of the Mass), beginning: 'Te igitur Clementissime pater per Ihesum Cristum filium tuum dominum nostrum'; including sequences and responses (ff. 29v-31r).
ff. 32r-33r: Mass for the dedication of a church, beginning: 'Terribilis est locus iste hic domus Dei est'.
f. 34v: Hymns, 'Gloria in excelsis', 'Credo', including the 'Ave Maria' and Psalms.
f. 49r: A line from the chant: 'Surrexit Christus et illuxit'.
f. 186r-v: Excerpts from a 15th-century missal, including lection on the Gospel of St Luke, the antiphon 'Letamini in domino exultare' followed by the Secret and the postcommunion (f. 186r); extracts from the Epistle to Hebrews (f. 186v), written by a different 15th-century scribe.
f. 203r: An excerpt from the Antiphon, beginning: 'Christus factus est pro nobis obediens'.
f. 205r-v: An excerpt of the preface of the mass for the Blessed Virgin Mary for the Visitation (f. 205r), followed by the prayer 'Deus qui de beate Marie virginis' (f. 205v), on an inserted smaller parchment leaf.
ff. 211v-212r: An excerpt from an offertory antiphon in the margins.
ff. 251r-258r: An addition to the Sanctoral, beginning with the mass for the feast of the visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary: 'In festo visitationis Beate Marie Virginis. Gaudemus omnes in domino diem festum celebrantes'; ending with the mass for the feast of St Giles. It is followed by an addition by a different scribe, dedicated to St Elizabeth (ff. 257r-258r), beginning: 'Tuorum corda fidelium Deus miserator illustra'.
f. 258v: An excerpt from the mass of the feast of St Hubert, including the oratio (prayer), the secreta (Secret) and the postcommunio (postcommunion), beginning: 'Deus qui perhennem gloriam sanctissimi confessoris tui atque Pontificis Huberti', followed by three prayers composed by Pope Innocent III (from 1160 to 1216), written by a different 15th-century scribe, beginning: 'A cunctis nos quesemus Domine mentis et corporis defende periculis'.
f. 259r: A Benediction of the lector (monk in charge of the reading), beginning: 'Averte quos domine ab hoc famulo tuo spiritum elationis et ignorancie'.
f. 259r-v is a medieval pastedown, containing a fragment of a mass for Pentecost, written by a late 13th-century scribe, with a Benediction of the lector (monk in charge of the reading), beginning: 'Averte quos domine ab hoc famulo tuo spiritum elationis et ignorancie' added above in a 15th-century hand.
Decoration:
A large initial with foliate decoration in red, blue, green and gold (f. 35r). Three large puzzle initials with pen-flourished decoration in red and blue (ff. 61r, 160r (x2). Red and blue puzzle initials with pen-flourishing. KL initials in red and blue with penwork decoration in the calendar. Initials in red, blue yellow and green throughout, some with penwork decoration. One small initial in yellow and green filled with a human figure. Rubrics in red.
Added in the 15th century: a miniature of the Crucifixion with the Virgin Mary and St John (f. 26v, in the lower margin) and a large 15th-century pen-flourished initial 'D' in red and green, surmounted by a human and a zoomorphic figures (f. 27r). Line fillers in red and green. Red paraphs in the shape of crosses. Musical notation in black and red.
