PLACITA ABBREVIATA: a collection from the Year Books of 1-20 Edward III (1327-1347), arranged by subject; mid 14th cent. French. Origin: England. Beg. 'En bref de dreit'. Contemporary index, ff. 3-3v. The Year Books for 1-10 Edward III were first printed in 1562: see R. V. Rogers, 'Manuscript Year Books for 1-10 Edward III (1327-1337)', EHR, lv (1940), pp. 562-595. The Year Books for 11-20 Edward III are printed, ed. A. J. Horwood and L. O. Pike, Rolls Series, 15 vols. (1883-1911). Marginalia throughout, comprising contemporary references to Year Books, and later medieval and 16th cent. memoranda. Owned by: (a) George Swillyngton, 16th cent., whose signature appears on ff. 2v, 170v. Possibly George Swillington, lawyer, M.P. for Leicester 1547 and 1553;- (b) Charles Holt, 1608. 'Ex dono Caroli Holt, anno 1608'. f. 2;- (c) Edward Umfreville, junior, of Inner Temple, whose ex libris, dated 1724, appears on f. 2. The manuscript was sold in Umfreville's sale. 20 Feb. 1758, see A catalogue of a genuine collection of law and other printed books and manuscripts, Samuel Paterson, Manuscripts, lot 99;- (d) John Topham, whose bookplate occurs f. 1. Topham sale, lot 692.
Vellum; ff. 170. Medieval foliation in roman numerals primo - clxvij throughout ff. 4-170. Sec. fol. 'pur ceo que ceo fust'. Gatherings: 2 fly-leaves, i14, ii8, iii-viii12, ix14 (lacks 12 and 13), x14 (lacks 1), xi14 (lacks 14), xii-xiii12, xiv6 (lacks 6), xv6. Catchwords regular, some trimmed, ff. 17v-159v, except quire x (f. 121v). Single columns. One documentary cursive script. Initial in red and blue penwork, f. 4.
