THEOLOGICAL COLLECTION: late 13th cent. Latin. Origin: England. The end fly-leaf (f. 311v) bears badly faded 15th cent. writing, overwritten by an early 16th cent. hand. Possibly the property of Rufford Priory, co. Nott.: 'Ryfford (a quo sit liber iste) est in foresta de Shirreuod in Mansfeldiam et Tuxfordiam', occurs in a 17th cent. hand, f. 311v. The following names occur: 'John de Lingcolle'; 15th cent. f. 311v;- 'William gremer, minor'; 15th cent. f. 311v; 'Imprintyd by Eddcar de [Whyt?]cherche'; early 16th cent. f. 311v;- Henry Becket; 16th cent. f. 24v;- John David; 16th cent. f. 101. Owned, late 16th cent., by Edward Ollerenshaw, see ff. 1, 1v, 70. Memoranda in Ollerenshaw's hand occur throughout, eg. ff. 102, 105, and he records that the volume had 328 folios, f. 1. Gatherings: i irregular, ii10 (lacks 7-10), iii10, iv8, v10, vi8, vii16, viii12, ix10, x12, xi8, xii10, xiii-xvi12, xvii16, xviii14, xix-xxi12, xxii-xxiii14, xxiv10, xxv18?, xxvi14? (lacks 13, 14), xxvii16? (lacks 15, 16). Two quires missing between ff. 4-5, with loss of text. Tight binding made counting difficult in quires xxv-xxvii. Catchwords to most quires from ff. 29v-257v. Signatures: roman numerals or small letters to most quires, variably on the right or left-hand side. Three gothic book scripts: A. ff. 1v-267v;- B. ff. 268-297v;- C. ff. 298-310v. Glosses and memoranda in a small contemporary hand, eg. ff. 4v, 53v-54v, 310v-311. Articles 4 and 8 begin on new quires. Decoration: Hand A. 1. ff. 1v-254v. 'Floriger' in thirty-nine books, collected from various works of St Augustine. Preceded by a table of contents, ff. 1v-4v. The text is imperfect at the beginning, starting in the middle of book 3 (f. 5). Text lost between ff. 10-11, books 3, 4. Some pages bear a contemporary gloss at the foot, and other marginal notes in the same hand, eg. ff. 53v-54v.
2. ff. 255-267. 'De dolore et lamentacione beate et gloriose Virgine Marie', a work of uncertain authorship, ascribed variously to St Anselm and
St Bernard of Clairvaux. Beg. 'Quis dabit capiti . . . imbrem lacrimarum ut possim flere'. Printed as an appendix to St Bernard's works in Migne, PL, clxxxii, 1133-1142. The text in the printed version is imperfect at the beginning and contains textural variations from the present MS.
