'Relazione / dello stato presente dell'Egitto / Scritta e dedicata / al / Serenissimo Ferdinando II Gran Duca di Toscana / da / Fra Giovanni Michele Vanslebio d'Effordia / Domenicano' (title on a paper slip pasted onto front pastedown); 1668. Italian transl. Inc. (f. 3) 'Parte Ia. / Delle cose Naturali / Cap. p.o / De i primi habitatori del paese: Dell'origine de Copti ... Stimano i più approvati Istorici', expl. (f. 75v) 'ma transitoria e caduca / Il Fine'. The text is preceded (ff. 1-2v) by a dedicatory preface to Ferdinand II of Tuscany, inc. 'Serenissimo Gran Duca / Assai più tardi di quello persuadevami', expl. 'humilmente la riverisco. Roma in S. Sisto 10 di maggio 1668. / ... / Fra. Giovanni Michele Vanslebio / dell'Ordine di S. Domenico'. A detailed table of contents is given on ff. 83-85. The MS. also contains: - (a) ff. 76-81v, Italian translation of two letters to Duke Ernest I the Pious of Saxe-Gotha from Matthaios IV, the Coptic Patriarch of Alexandria in 1660-1676 (ff. 76-78), and from John, archpriest of St. Mark in Alexandria (ff. 78-81v), 1665; - (b) ff. 82, 85v-86v and lower pastedown, notes partly relating to Abyssinia and providing (f. 85v and lower pastedown) names of authors and text read by Wansleben. '176' in pencil in top left corner of front pastedown: uncorrect reference to the sale lot.
Paper; ff. 86. Possibly assembled from two different MSS., as suggested by the two sets of old foliations in the MS. and by a slight change in the lay-out and handwriting: - (1) old alphabetical pagination in ink 'a-cc' (ff. 3-18), repeating 's' three times and omitting 'z'; - (2) old foliation in ink '13-75' (ff. 19-81). 202 x 143mm. Late 17th-cent. binding of full vellum over limp pasteboards.
