F. Letter from Charles Fitzgeffrey (d.1638) to Richard, 1st Baron Robartes, written from Fowey, co. Cornw.; 24 March 1633/4. The writer gives an eye-witness account of the damage caused to St Nicholas's Church there by a thunderbolt that struck the tower on 6 Jan. 1633/4. He also mentions wall-paintings, no longer extant, which represented St Christopher and Christ's baptism and were brought to light as a result on pillars on the north and south sides respectively of the nave. This letter is noted in the entry given for its writer in the Dictionary of National Biography. It comes from the Library of the Dukes of Manchester at Kimbolton Castle: see H.M.C. 1st Report (1870), Appendix, p. 13, and 8th Report (1881), App., Pt. II, p. 51, col. b. Purchased at Sotheby's, 22 July 1988, lot 321.
ff. 64-65v. Bifolium formed from a whole sheet measuring 406 x 323mm. Endorsed (f. 2v) in the hand of Sir Nathaniel Rich 'Mr Fitz Geffery concerning the Thunder at Foy in Cornwall ye 6th January. 1633. this letter was written to ye Lo. Roberts. March following.' On the same page occur the numbers '446', in red crayon, and '4', in pencil.
