This manuscript contains the only copy of the Middle English text, Ayenbite of Inwyt, together with religious poems and treatises. The first and last quires (ff. 1-12, 97-108) appear to have been added not long after the manuscript was written, possibly as protective flyleaves (see Gordon 1979, pp. 3,4).
Decoration:
1 large puzzle initial in red and blue with purple and red foliate infill and pen-flourishing (f. 13r). Small initials in red with foliate pen-flourishing in purple or in blue with foliate pen-flourishing in red, sometimes ending in zoomorphic figures (e.g., f. 34v). Paraph marks in red or blue.

Origin: Canterbury, England, written by the monk Michael of Northgate in 1340 at the Benedictine abbey of St Augustine's, Canterbury: with his colophon 'Ymende thet this boc is volueld ine the eve of the holy aposteles Symon an Judas of ane brother of the choystre of sauynt Austin of Caterberi Ine the yeare of oure lhordes beringe 1340' (f. 94r), and 'this boc is dan Michelis of Northgate ywrite an englis of his ozene hand. Thet hatte Ayenbyte of inwyt. And is of the bochouse of saynt Austines of Canterberi', followed beneath by a monogram 'ML' for Michael, and 'C:C:' over an erasure (f. 2r);
Provenance: The Benedictine abbey of St Augustine, Canterbury, the shelfmark of the abbey library:' 'Dist. XVI Ga IIII' (f. 2r) and listed in the 15th century catalogue of the library: Dublin, Trinity College MS D.1.19, no1536 (see Ker 1964, Barker-Benfield 2008).
Thomas Howard (b. 1585, d. 1646), 2nd Earl of Arundel, 4th Earl of Surrey, and 1st Earl of Norfolk, art collector and politician.
Henry Howard (b. 1628, d. 1684), 6th Duke of Norfolk, presented to the Royal Society in 1667.
The Royal Society, London: ink stamp: 'Soc. Reg. Lond / ex dono HENR. HOWARD / Norfolciensis.' (f. 13r) and book-plate with the pencil inscription: ‘XV.7.17’, (f. 1r).
Purchased by the British Museum from the Royal Society together with 549 other Arundel manuscripts in 1831.
