- Title:
- Formulary of psalms and prayers made by Lord Henry Howard
- Scope & Content:
-
This is a formulary in Latin of psalms and prayers compiled by Lord Henry Howard, from 1604 Earl of Northampton. It is written carefully and neatly in his own hand.
The title-page, written in English and in another (early 17th-century hand) on the first folio of the parchment volume, calls it 'A formularie of Psalmes & Prayers made by Henry Erle of Northampton, and writt w[i]th his own hand' (f. 1r). It was evidently a personal copy which passed to Northampton's Howard kin. The title-page also has a stamp recording the gift of the volume to the Royal Society by Henry Howard (later 6th Duke of Norfolk), grandson of Northampton's great-nephew and heir Thomas Howard, 14th Earl of Arundel, 4th Earl of Surrey and 1st Earl of Norfolk: 'Soc. Reg. Lond / ex dono HENR. HOWARD / Norfolciensis’.
The call-number for the volume was evidently originally 185, written at the top of the title-page in a 17th-century: this has been struck out and replaced with 300, written in a 17th or 18th-century hand - certainly a hand that predates the acquisition of the volume by the British Museum in 1831.
