The Arundel manuscripts were collected by Thomas Howard, 2nd Earl of Arundel (d. 1646). In 1666 his grandson, Henry Howard, decided to divide the collection between the Royal Society and the College of Arms. In 1831 the manuscripts held by the Royal Society were purchased by the British Museum.
