- Scope & Content:
-
The first part of a lectionary from the Old and New Testaments, selected and arranged by Athanasius, Patriarch of Antioch, intended for use in the Church of the East. The lessons are all taken from the Pešíṭtā, with the exception of a few at the beginning, which are from the LXX and the Harklean versions.
The text of the readings is found on ff. 1v-138v. The colophon, on f. 138v, states that the manuscript was copied in 1311 AG (1000 CE). The texts were collated by Māri Atnaᵓsiús, Patriarch of Antioch, and that the text was copied by his disciple Rúmᵓanús.
The text features considerable amounts of marginalia, occasionally in Greek, which explains the language and content of the work. A detailed drawing on the bottom of f. 57r shows the Archangel Gabriel and the Virgin Mary in an explanation of the Annunciation. There is also a very faded sketch of a head on f. 114v.
There are three very faded inscriptions of f. 1r, two of which are in Syriac and one in Arabic. The Arabic passage states that the manuscript was used by a man named Sargis. The two Syriac passages are of the same epistolary form, with minor divergences between them.
On f. 139r are various notes, all in Syriac, but written in various hands and styles. The largest of these is a statement that the book is for the Church of Bar Ṣawmā, which is followed by an invocation asking for prayers for the copyist and all people. Next to this is a further text that ask readers to pray for Yešúᶜā, who was persecuted in the Church of Bar Ṣawmā in Antioch in 1533 AG (1222 CE), as well as the man with him, Rabban Yaᶜqúb. A third text states that Agrípús, Deacon of Mílíṭíní, visited the Church of Bar Ṣawmā. A final inscription, which is very faded, states that the book is of the Temple of Bar Ṣawmā. The back of the folio has many different words in Syriac and Arabic that have now been faded to the point of illegibility.
The manuscript contains occasional illumination, especially at the end of important passages. This illumination often takes the form of interlocking bands in red and black, with some examples also having a silver and/or copper tint.
Most folios are in good condition, although f. 1 is both torn and shows considerable staining by water.
