Bugis diary, 1808-1812
- Scope & Content:
-
A Buginese diary from 1808 to 9 July 1809, and July and Aug. 1812, with pages prepared for 1813.
Apparently a (copy of a) diary of the king of Bone, Aḥmad aṣ-Ṣāliḥ (19 May 1809: ‘on this day I completed the 35th year of my reign in Bone'). (Cf. Add. 12354-7.)
The speaker in the first person in the part for the year 1812 is certainly Aḥmad's son and successor To-appatunru’ who, under 22-23 July, mentions the old king's death.
On pp. not belonging to the diary a few notes are written: on f. 1v. a note of 16 Rab. I A.H. 1082 [A.D. 1671] about fines ‘which I [apparently Arung Palakka] imposed on countries conquered by me’, followed by a list of these countries; on ff. 44v.-45r. a copy of a Malay letter of 17 Sept. A.D. 1810 sent by the king in reply to a letter from Sinekselengsi [His Excellency] Marskal, i.e. Daendels.
See Matthes, 1875, pp. 91-2. (This description from Dr. A. A. Cense.)
