A. Map of Great Britain; 18th cent. No scale given, but comparison with printed maps indicates circa 1:2600000. The map shows England in detail, with only outlines for Scotland, Ireland, France and the Channel Islands. Cathedral cities are prominently marked in bolder characters and with a tiny outline of a church. Place names are written within county boundaries with little regard for relative geographical position: e.g. in Lancashire, 'Hastlingden' (Haslingden, near Blackburn, 30 miles inland) appears to be on the coast, Wigan is marked in the north-west of the county, between Garstang and Poulton, and Preston is marked in the extreme south of the county.
Paper. 300 x 200mm., mounted on thick board (possibly a book-cover) 330 x 210mm.
