Some sketches are running drafts of substantial sections, others are single leaves relating to short passages only. In both sketches and autograph full score, Add MS 52530 A C, reference is made to the pagination of the libretto, Add MS 69832 A C. Identification in the following description is made using the cue numbers to be found in Add MS 52530 A C. As far as possible, the sketches have been arranged following the order of the work in the form found there, although some passages are represented by more than one leaf or group of sketches, and some leaves contain sketches for a number of different passages.
1. ff. 1-27. Material relating to Act I. Includes a continuous draft of the passage from the beginning to 6 bars after fig. 21 in Add. 52530 A (ff. 10-21).
2. ff. 28-77. Material relating to Act II. Includes a continuous draft of the passage from the beginning of Act II to 8 bars after fig. 15 in Add. 52530 B (ff. 29-36), a draft in full score of the passage from fig. 20 to fig. 26 (ff. 39-40), continuous drafts in short score of the passages from fig. 27 to fig. 45 (ff. 41-45), from fig. 45 to fig. 54 (ff. 46-47), from fig. 65 to fig. 93 (ff. 56-58), from fig. 75 to 4 bars after fig. 79 (ff. 61-63), from fig. 74 to fig. 83 (ff. 64-66), from fig. 99 to fig. 103 (ff. 70-72), from 3 bars before fig. 104 to fig. 106 (ff. 73-74), and from fig. 108 to the end of the Act (ff.76-77).
3. ff. 78-126. Material relating to Act III. Includes a note on the orchestration (f. 78) and continuous drafts of the passages from the beginning of Act III to fig. 17 in Add MS 52530 C (ff. 80-92), from 1 bar before fig. 57 to fig. 85 (ff. 115-117), from fig. 85 to 1 bar after fig. 86 and from fig. 3 [of the second numerical series] to 2 bars before fig. 11 (ff. 122-124). With a copy in short score, annotated by Elgar, of the passage from fig. 17 to 1 bar after fig. 19 (f. 93).
