PORTLAND PAPERS. Vol. DXI (29/57). Chartulary of the Preceptory of the Knights of St John of Jerusalem, North Baddesley, co. Southt.; 1397-1398. Latin. The cartulary which comprises copies of private deeds arranged topographically and preceded (ff. 1-5) by a table of contents is stated in the title (f. 1) to have been renewed by William Hulles, preceptor of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem. Extracts circa 1739 by Rev. George Harbin in Harley 6603, ff. 72-127. Initials flourished in red and blue ink. See Davis, op. cit., p. 4, No. 17. Illuminated initials (ff. 1, 6) with the arms of William Hulles (azure a chevron argent between three fleurs-de-lys or). Formerly Welbeck Abbey MS. I.D.1.
Vellum; ff. iv+53. 340 x 235mm. Contemporary binding of sheepskin over wooden boards, with two grooves cut into the leading edge for thongs of which only one stub remains.
