William Cavendish-Bentinck (b. 1893, d. 1977), seventh Duke of Portland: deposited the manuscript at the British Museum on 21 August 1953 as part of ‘The Portland Loan’ (Loan 29), consisting chiefly of the papers of the Harley family of Brampton Bryan, and of the related families of Vere, Holles, Cavendish and Cavendish-Bentinck, originally housed at Welbeck Abbey and deposited at the British Museum between 1947 and 1967. The envelope is inscribed ‘Deposited as an indefinite loan by the Duke of Portland, for addition to other MSS. from Welbeck. 21.8.53’.
The Portland Papers and Add. Ch. 76671-76767 were accepted by the Government in lieu of Capital Transfer Tax in March 1986 and, on the advice of the Royal Commission on Historical Manuscripts and in accordance with the wishes of the Portland executors, were allocated to the British Library in May 1987.
