Transcripts and extracts from the Parliament Rolls from the time of Henry VII in the Chapel of the Rolls in Chancery Lane London, compiled by Simonds d’Ewes. Transcripts in this volume are in Ralph Starkey's hand. D’Ewes’s has added running titles and original folio numbers and devised the title pages in each volume.
Title page of volume 2: ‘Transcripts and Collectanies out of the Parliament Rolls of R[ichard] 3. and H[enry] 7. in the Chappell of the Rolls in Chancerie lane London. The 2 Tome or Volume conteining All the Parliaments held in H. 7. time from the 4th yeare of his raigne to the last Parliament of the same King held in the 19. yeare of his said raigne’.
Old English inscription by Simonds D’Ewes, f. 1*v (opposite title page): ‘Eala gif ic raedde on geogoðe þonne cuðe nu ic rum god. Simonds D’Ewes’.

The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (1661-1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (1689-1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts. Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (1694-1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (1715-1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
