Manuscript volume of transcripts from public records. The first part consists of extracts from the patent rolls in the hand of Ralph Starkey. The second part comprises a number of extracts, in the hand of Simonds D’Ewes and others, some fragmentary.
Contents:
ff. 1-110: Extracts from the patent rolls of King John (ff. 1-10), Edward I (ff. 10v-17), King John on the ‘Terrae Normannorum’ (ff. 18-29, imperfect) and Henry III (ff. 29v-110). Written in the hand of Ralph Starkey, with marginalia and annotations by Simonds D’Ewes.
ff. 111-183: Transcripts from the public records.
- ff. 111-142: Excerpts from the Lincoln ecclesiastical archives at the time of Henry III and of Robert de Grosseteste, Bishop of Lincoln. Imperfect, D’Ewes original foliation was ff. 79-110 (preceding and following folios no longer present in this volume).
- ff. 143-146: Excerpts from Domesday book for Suffolk. Written in the hand of Simonds D’Ewes.
- ff. 147-157: Excerpts from Kings Bench pleas at Westminster, Hilary term, 18 Edward II, namely the trials of Roger Damory (f. 147), Henry de Wylyngton (f. 149) and Andrew de Harclay, Earl of Carlisle (f. 153).
- ff. 158-159: Excerpts from the account by John of Bloumville of the escheator’s revenue in the counties of Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Huntingdonshire, Essex and Hertfordshire, from 29 November, 17 Edward II, to the following Michaelmas. Written in the hand of Simonds D’Ewes.
- ff. 160-175: . Excerpts from the closed rolls, 1, 2 and 3 Henry IV.
- ff. 176-177: Fragment. Apparently excerpts from the records of King John, regarding the lands of the Normans (‘Terrae Normannorum’) (see no. 3 above).
- f. 178-182: Excerpts from the escheats, in the times of Kings Henry II, Edward I, Edward III and Richard II.
- f. 183: Fragment. Final folio of an unknown manuscript of extracts from the records of 6 Henry III.

The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (1661-1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (1689-1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (1694-1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (1715-1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
