ff. 1r-36v: Cuthbert Tunstall (b. 1474, d. 1559), Bishop of London [r. 1521-1530], ‘A booke of all the Spyrituall Benifites and Chaunteryes within London and the Dyocesse of the same’; beginning ‘Pleaseth it your grace to understande, that where the kinges highnes my sovereigne lorde kinge of England and of ffraunce defendour of Christes faythe and lorde of Irelande, by his gracious moste honorable letters, bearinge date the Tenthe daye of August in the xiiijth yeare of the reigne of my said sovereigne lorde and by certen instructons signed with his grasis hande, comaundinge me Cuthberte busshoppe of London his humble subiecte oratour and chappleyne, to move stirre and induce the spirituall persons of my Dyocesse of London, as well regulers as seculers, aswell exemptes as not exemptes excepte those whose names were conteined in a scedule to the said Instructions annexed’; ending ‘In wytnes of these premysses I the foresaid Cuthbert Busshopppe of London have set to my greate Seale, the xijth daye of November in the foresaid xiiijth yeare of the reigne of my said sovereigne lorde’ [15 November 1522].
The manuscript contains later two later additions:
ff. 1* and 37: fragmentary leaves of an English missal, written in the 15th century.

Provenance:
Sir Simonds D’Ewes (b. 1602, d. 1650), 1st baronet, diarist, antiquary, and friend of Sir Robert Cotton (see Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972), p. 131); recorded in his catalogues as X.18.
Sir Simonds D’Ewes (d. 1722), 3rd baronet and grandson of the former: inherited and later sold the D’Ewes library to Robert Harley on 4 October 1705 for £450.
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d. 1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
