  • f. 1: Copy of the King’s Commission to treat, granted to Sir Henry Wooton, Ambassador Extraordinary to the States of the United Provinces, Clement Edmonds Esq., clerk of his Privy Council, Robert Midleton and Morris Abbott, City of London merchants. Dated 29 November 1614. Heading: ‘The Treatie of the Hage Concerning the Trade into the East Indies and the Fishing of the whale northward’.
  • f. 2: Copy of the instructions.
  • f. 4: Copy of King James’s letter to Count Maurice.
  • f. 4v: Copy of the King’s letter to the States General of the United Provinces.
  • f. 4v: Account of events from the time of the English Commissioners taking leave of the King, 12 January 1614, to their entering upon the Treaty.
  • f. 7: The English Commissioners’ first remonstrance to the States, 6 February 1614 (in English and French).
  • f. 10: The copy of the Commission from the States. Dated 14 February 1615.

After this the treaty was broken off and progress halted by continuing engagements in the East Indies.

  • f. 81: Repeated application by the Dutch, after 20 days, to the English Commissioners concerning war with the Spaniards in the East Indies, 18 April 1615 (in French and English).
  • f. 82: Articles delivered to the Dutch asking them to make their meaning plainer, 19 April 1615 (in French and English).
  • f. 83: Answer of the Dutch to the articles, upon which the treaty broke off (in French and English).
  • f. 84: An English copy of the letter sent by the States General to King James, excusing the non-agreement of the Commissioners on either side, 6 May 1615.

Former owner: Sir Simonds D'Ewes (1602-1650).

The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (1661-1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (1689-1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.

Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (1694-1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (1715-1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
