ff. 1r-5r: A 'Trewe Establishmente and order made by the Quenes most excellente majestie aswell of all manner of Officers, Captens, and Souldiours that shalbe of Thordynary garisons and Crewes within the saide Towne and other holdes in the North parts nere thereunto / As alsoof the dailie and yerely dyetts, wages, and enterteignements of the same duringe her highnes pleasure. The same to take place, and begynnynge from the feast of Mighelmas laste as followeth’ [20 June 1576].
ff. 6r-15r: A ‘Summary of certeyne orders to be observed in our Towne of Barwick uppon Twede, over and besydes suche aunciente orders as have hertofore byn in force in the tyme of our deere father, brother, and syster gyven the twentith daie of June in the Eightenth yere of our reigne 1576’.
ff. 16r-19v: A text on ‘Instructions geven the twentith daie of June in the Eightenth yere of our reigne. To our trustie and welbeloved servante, Roberte Bowes Esquiour, whome we have appoynted, And by thies presents do appoynt Threaforer of our Towne of Barwick uppon Twede, and Paymaster as well of our garrisons and men of warre, ordynary and extraordynary within our saide Towne, and all other holdes and ffortes upon our Marches towarde Scotland / As also of our works, ffortificacions and all other extraordynary charges within our towne aforesaide, and elswhere in our ffrontiers there’.

Provenance:
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d. 1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
