Folio manuscript volume titled ‘A Journall of the Parliament begunne Nov. 3. Tuesday ao.Dm. 1640. ao.16. Regis Caroli collected and gathered for the most part of it by me Sir Simonds D’Ewes of Stowhall in the Countie of Suffolke Knight and Baronett; being one of the Burgesses of the Towne and Burrough of Sudburie in the same Countie, being at that time High Sheriffe of the same Countie, when I was elected & by myself returned’.
The journal begins 3 November 1640, and ends 24 February 1641 [1642]. The dates within the volume are not sequential.
Index of dates on ff. 1*-3*.
Contains a prayer read by the Speaker of the House of Commons each morning and afternoon, as well as during the Earl of Stafford’s trial (f. 4*).

Provenance:
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (1661-1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (1689-1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (1694-1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (1715-1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
