This 12th-century French manuscript contains the Gospel of John with commentary by Church Fathers and medieval authorities (Glossa Ordinaria) added to its margins and between the text's lines.

Dimensions: 235 × 150 mm (text space: 180 × 130 mm).
Foliation: ff. 56 (+ 4 unfoliated paper flyleaves at the beginning + at the end); 1 parchment stub between f. 2 and f. 3; and 1 between f. 35 and f. 36; part of f. 36 has been cut off and replaced with new parchment (causing loss of text); the lower margin of f. 52 has been cut off and replaced with new parchment; the quires have been mounted on paper guards.
Script: Protogothic.
Binding: British Museum/British Library in-house: red half leather binding with Harley's bookplate gold-stamped on the upper and lower covers; the spine inscribed in gold at the British Museum: 'S. JOHN'S GOSPEL'; re-bound on 21 September 1965.

George Carew (b. 1555, d. 1629), baron Carew of Clopton and earl of Totnes: inscribed with his marks (top of f. 1r) (see Watson, The Library of Sir Simonds D'Ewes (1966), p. 211).
Sir Simonds d'Ewes (b.1602, d. 1650), 1st baronet, diarist, antiquary, and friend of Sir Robert Cotton (Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972), p. 131).
Sir Simonds D’Ewes (d. 1722), 3rd baronet and grandson of the former: inherited and later sold the D’Ewes library to Robert Harley on 4 October 1705 for £450.
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d. 1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
