ff. 1r–29r: A mid-16th-century heraldic manuscript. A note opposite f. 1r by Frederic Madden records that this manuscript is written in the same hand as Harley MS 567 (another heraldic manuscript).

Decoration:
The Arms of the Talbots within the Garter with mottoes, crests, supporters and mantling in colours and gold (ff. 2v, 3r). The Arms of England and the Order within the Garter with motto and surmounted by the Royal crown in colours and gold (f. 3v). 'Champ' initials in blue, red and gold. Marginal notes in red.

Foliation: ff. 29 + 9 (ff. 1, 28–29 are original paper flyleaves, ff. 4–5 an inserted 16th-century paper bifolium; + 2 unfoliated original blank ruled leaves after f. 27, and 5 early and modern paper flyleaves at the beginning and 4 at the end).

George Talbot, 6th earl of Shrewsbury (b. c.1522, d. 1590), nobleman: his ownership before 1590 stated in the note by his son Gilbert (f. 2r).
Gilbert Talbot, 7th earl of Shrewsbury (b. 1552, d. 1616), landowner: his notes (ff. 1v, 2r)
Sir Simonds d'Ewes (b. 1602, d. 1650), 1st baronet, diarist, antiquary, and friend of Sir Robert Cotton (see Watson 1966, Wright 1972).
Sir Simonds D’Ewes (d. 1722), 3rd baronet and grandson of the former: inherited and later sold the D’Ewes library to Robert Harley on 4 October 1705 for £450 (see Add. 70478 (formerly Loan 29/254 packet 2); Watson 1966; Wright and Wright 1966).
Charles Talbot, 12th earl and duke of Shrewsbury (b. 1660, d. 1718), politician: his note recording the gift of the manuscript to him by Robert Harley in 1711 (f. 2r).
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts: returned to Robert Harley by the duchess of Shrewsbury after the death of her husband in 1718, and inscribed as usual by Harley's librarian, Humfrey Wanley, '15th day of September 1719' (f. 2r).
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d. 1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
