Loose papers relating to numismatics, mostly very rough notes in the hand of Simonds D’Ewes. Written on the back of letters or papers on other subjects.
Contents:
ff. 1-24: Rough notes on British coinage, written on the back of recycled letters. Heading: ‘Prolegomena ad Thesaurum Numarium Britanno-Anglicum’ (f. 1).
ff. 25-26: Notes on the back of as manuscript note: ‘A breife note how the case betweene Sir Thomas Middleton and Sir John Price stands in charge and proofe’ [imperfect].
ff. 29-37: ‘Notitia sive Elenchus generalis Numorum aeneorum, aureorum, argenteorum, sub-aeratorum, et argento tinctorum Romanorum a Julio Caesare usque ad Heraclium [etc.]’. Title and a few loose notes.

Former owner: Sir Simonds D'Ewes (1602-1650).
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (1661-1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (1689-1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (1694-1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (1715-1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
