Kitab-i Remel - كتاب رمل
- Scope & Content:
-
This volume contains the book of remel, or divination by means of dots. The preamble of the text tates that it was composed for Hārūn al-Rashīd by a sage known as ᶜAbdallah ibn Ani.
The instructions given for consulting it are as follows: make at random an indefinite number of dots on sand or paper. Divide the number of dots by twelve. The result will show the page and the line at which you will find the desired answer to your question.
The book consists of 142 bab, each of which occupies a page, and contains twelve oracular answers in as many lines.
An illustration of two crossed scimitars with the Dua-i Kılınç is found on f 81v, across from the (presumed) text of the Dua on f 82r.
A number of additions in both Ottoman Turkish and Arabic in various hands are found on the opening pages of the text.
The text is undated, but was apparently copied in the 17th century CE.
