f. 1*v: A note by Sir Simonds D'Ewes (b. 1602, d. 1650) concerning the first item in the manuscript (ff. 1r-30v); dated 1637.
ff. 1r-30v: A collection of notes made by Mr Paul D'Ewes on sermons preached by a certain Mr Chatterton, living in Cambridge.
ff. 31*v-31r: Added pen-trials and inscriptions, including the Latin phrase, 'Hic iacet in tumulo rosa mundi non rosa munda', repeated several times in different hands.

ff. 81v-82r (lower margin): An account of the excommunication of the priest Francis Fletcher (b. c. 1555, d. c. 1619) by Sir Francis Drake (b. c. 1540, d. 1596) in 1580.
f. 82r: An account of Sir Francis Drake's capture of a haul of silver treasure between Coquimbo and Payta.
ff. 83r-90v: An account of Sir Francis Drake's circumnavigation of the world (1577-1580), his passage through the Straits of Magellan, and his return voyage to England in 1580.
ff. 91r-98v: Relatione delle cose piu notabili dello Stato di Napoli, an account in Italian of the most notable things about the state of Naples.
ff. 99r-101r: A catalogue of the poems contained in Englands Helicon, an anthology of Elizabeth pastoral poems compiled by John Flasket and first published in 1600.

ff. 102r-105v: A catalogue of the poems written by 'A. W.', an anonymous author who was featured in A Poetical Rhapsody, an anthology compiled by Francis Davison and first published in 1602.

ff. 115r-126r: A copy of the same sermon. A note by Sir Simonds D'Ewes (f. 115r) states that ff. 115-119 were written in the hand of Richard Simonds (d. c. 1611), his maternal grandfather.
f. 127r-v: A fold-out draft petition of Ralph Starkey to Sir Francis Bacon (b. 1561, d. 1626), Lord Keeper, concerning his suit against Henry Starkey and David Massey, inscribed with numerous pen-trials.
f. 127*r: An inscribed title, 'The earl of Cumberlands voiage', with the text left blank. An account of the expedition appears on ff. 177r-216r.
ff. 128r-141v: A speech delivered by Robert Cecil (b. 1563, d. 1612), Earl of Salisbury and Lord High Treasurer, to the lords, knights and burgesses of both Houses of Parliament at their meeting in The Painted Chamber; dated 1609.
ff. 142r-144r: The propositions of James I (r. 1603-1625) concerning the marriage of Prince Charles (later Charles I, r. 1625-1649) and the Infanta Maria Anna of Spain (b.1606, d. 1646).
ff. 145r-151v: A speech of James I given in Parliament, dated 5 April 1514, with a note in the hand of Ralph Starkey.

Binding: Post-1600. Brown half-leather binding, tooled-in gold, with the Harleian armorial bookplate gold-stamped on the upper and lower covers; marbled endpapers.

Provenance:
Ralph Starkey (d. 1628), merchant and archivist, owned and partially written by him: wrote the second item in the manuscript (ff. 32r-45r) and added notes to a number of others (ff. 81r, 145r); his collections acquired by Sir Simonds D'Ewes in 1628.
Sir Simonds D’Ewes (b. 1602, d. 1650), 1st baronet, diarist, antiquary, and friend of Sir Robert Cotton, acquired in 1628: added notes in his hand (ff. 1*v, 115r); not listed in his catalogues (see Watson, The Library of Sir Simonds D'Ewes (1966), p. 322 [X.47]; Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972), p. 131).
Sir Simonds D’Ewes (d. 1722), 3rd baronet and grandson of the former: inherited and later sold the D’Ewes library to Robert Harley on 4 October 1705 for £450; according to a receipt in Add MS 70478 (Portland Papers) [formerly Loan 29/254 packet 2] (see Watson, The Library of Sir Simonds D’Ewes (1966), pp. 60, 91 n. 308; Diary (1966), p. xviii n. 3).
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts. Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d. 1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
