Printed copy of William Lambarde's 'Archaionomia' with manuscript annotations
- Scope & Content:
-
Printed copy of William Lambarde, Archaionomia, Sive De Priscis Anglorum Legibus libri, Cambridge, 1644, a collection of Anglo-Saxon laws in Latin and Old English, with manuscript annotations. This copy is the second edition, edited by Abraham Whelock (1593-1653). The annotations consist of variant readings added in the margins from other Anglo-Saxon sources. Some of these have been identified as the notes of the German philologist and antiquary Franciscus Junius (or ‘François du Jon’, 1591-1677). The source of some of his notes is the 'Codex Seldenianus’ (i.e. Harley MS 55), which was previously owned by John Selden (1584-1654) and was studied by Junius while owned by Simonds D’Ewes.
Contents include:
- f. 8r: Manuscript annotations to the laws of King Ine, ‘Leges Inae Regis’, citing variant readings from the ‘Textus Roffensis’ (Rochester Cathedral Library, MS A.3.5).
- ff. 15r-18r: Manuscript annotations to the laws of King Alfred, ‘Praefatio in Leges Aluredi Regis’, citing variant readings.
- ff. 38v-40r: Manuscript annotations to the laws of King Edgar, ‘Leges Edgari Regis’, by Francis Junius. Citing variant readings from two different sources, including the ‘Codex Seldenianus’ (Harley MS 55).
- ff. 56r-70v: Manuscript annotations to the laws of King Cnut, ‘Leges Canuti Regis’, by Francis Junius. Citing variant readings from two different manuscripts, including the ‘Codex Seldenianus’ (Harley MS 55).
