Letters in Latin from Albertus Joachim, ambassador of the United Provinces, to Sir Simonds D’Ewes on English and continental affairs. Chiefly written from London, Chester and other places in England, with some from abroad, 1627-1641. Arranged chronologically. Interspersed with copies and extracts from other letters and documents on foreign affairs, chiefly in French as follows:
f. 46: Extract of a letter in French from King Charles I of England to the Ambassador of the United Provinces, 14 September, 1631 new style. Headed ‘Extraict d’une Lettre escrite (de Zelande) a Monsieur l’Ambassadeur de Messeigneurs les Estats Generaulx des Provinces Unies du Pais Bas, aupres le Roy de la Grande Bretaigne, etc.’
f. 55: Extract of letters from Amsterdam, 10 January 1635. Headed ‘Extraict translaté des Lettres d’Amsterdam, du x[ieme] janvier, 1635.
f. 58: Letter from King Louis XIII of France to the governors of the United Provinces on the detention of the Duc de Paylaurent, 14 Feb 1635. Headed ‘Lettre escrite par le Roy aux Gouverneurs de Provinces, sur la detention du Duc de Paylaurent (14 fevrier 1635) et ce qui l’y est passé.
f. 61: Extracts from two documents, a letter dated Nijmegen, 22 May 1635 new style, and a an extract from the Registers of the Parliament at Paris, 21 May 1635, new style.

f. 95: Brief list of prisoners captured by our cavalry, 27 July 1638, in the village of Wouw and its environs, from the forces of the Spanish Cardinal (Cardenal-Infante Fernando de España): 32 bands of cavalry and over 1,000 infantrymen and arquebusiers, under the leadership of Marquis Sfondrato, general legate of the Cardinal. Includes names of prefects, captains and legates. Headed: ‘Index Captivorum, quos equites nostri, die 27 Julij 1638, in pago de Wouw et confinijs ejusdem coeperunt ex cohortibus Cardinalis Hispaniae; quae constabant ex 32 turmis equitum, et plus mille peditibus et Sclopetarijs, sub ductu Marchionis Sfondrato, Legati Generalis supradicti Cardinalis’.

The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (1661-1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (1689-1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (1694-1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (1715-1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
Former owner: Sir Simonds D’Ewes (1602-1650).
