Correspondence between Simonds D'Ewes and his family and close friends, including a few letters written by them to others. Includes correspondence with his first and second wives, Anne (1613-1641) and Elizabeth (d. 1656), and his brother Richard who died at the Siege of Reading in 1642/3. The letters show signs of original folds, addresses and broken wax seals.

ff. 1-105: Letters from Simonds D’Ewes to his family and friends, arranged chronologically, 1615-1642. Includes letters to his mother Sisillia, father Paul D’Ewes (1567-1631), first wife Anne, second wife Elizabeth, brother Richard D’Ewes, sister, and friends, Nathaniel Barnardiston, Martin Stuteville of Dalham, William Porter, and father in law Henry Willoughby. Among them are letters about his first wife Anne’s death (ff. 89-96).

Former owner: Sir Simonds D'Ewes (1602-1650).
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (1661-1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (1689-1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (1694-1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (1715-1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
