A volume of speeches and orations made by Sir Nicholas Bacon, once owned by Sir Christopher Hatton.
f. 2r: Autograph note by Peter Le Neve, Rouge Croix herald, 20 July 1692, who identifies the volume as being written in Hatton's hand.
ff. 3r–4r: A note of the 'matters & discourses' contained in the volume
ff. 5r–6v: Nicholas Bacon's oration to Elizabeth I at her gallery in Westminster, encouraging her to marry.
f. 7r–8r: An answer given by Bacon to the Lord Mayor when he was presented; a speech given by Bacon to a sergeant at law called to be a judge; the speeches Bacon gave to Elizabeth when she first appointed him.
ff. 8r–11r: A speech made by Bacon to the Lords of the Star Chamber, 1568.
ff. 11r–12r: on line 17 another speech begins, praising Elizabeth's choice to appoint Sir Thomas Gargrave as Speaker.
f.12r: on line 5 another speech begins: Bacon dismisses the Lords who had assembled the previous day to proceed against Edmund Grindal, because of his continued illness.
ff. 12v–21r: Bacon's speech of 15 December 1559, made at the Council board, on aid required by the Scots to remove the French from Scotland.
ff. 21r–24v: Speech made by Bacon during Midsummer Term 1562, on whether Elizabeth should meet with Mary Queen of Scots; afterwards Bacon spoke to the Queen at Greenwich in July.
ff. 25r–30r: Speech made by Bacon to the Lords and others assembled at Parliament, 1583.
ff. 30v–35v: An oration made by Bacon on 8 March, in front of both houses and the Queen.
ff. 36r–37r: Bacon's speech to to Sir Robert Bell, when he was made Lord Chief Baron (of the Exchequer, in 1577.) A summary made by Sir Walter Mildmay.
ff. 38r–41v: Bacon's reasons for encouraging the King of France to aid Mary Queen of Scots, with answers.
ff. 42r–v: Bacon's apology to Elizabeth I for sending letters to the Justices of the Peace.
ff. 42v–43r: The reasons why Bacon sent the letters without especial warrant.
ff. 43r–44r: Bacon's advice on the government of Ireland.
ff. 44v–46v: Bacon's memorandum on French matters, in the form of questions and answers, written Whitsunday (30 May) 1563.
ff. 46v–47v: Bacon's speech on New Haven (Le Havre), delivered at Greenwich in front of Henry FitzAlan, Lord Arundel; Francis Russell, Lord Bedford; Henry Herbert, Earl of Pembroke; Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester; Sir James Crofts, the Controller of the Household; William Cecil, the Secretary, and Mr John Mason.
ff. 48r–49v: Bacon's speech on French inhabitants, made at Parliament.
ff. 50r–51v: Resolution on matters regarding France, Flanders, and Ireland, agreed at Twelfthtide 1563, Windsor.
ff. 51v–53v: Letter from Bacon to a bishop, chastising him for not performing his duties, 27 September 1578.

Peter Le Neve (1661–1729), first President of the Society of Antiquaries (1707–1724): owned in 1696, autograph memorandum on f. 2r.
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (1661–1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (1689–1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts. Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (1694–1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (1715–1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
