ff. 1r-49r: John of Worcester [here attributed to Florence of Worcester], Chronicon ex chronicis; with a continuation; translated into English by Raphael Holinshed [Hollingshead] (b. c. 1525, d. 1580 [?]) for John Stow; dated 1572.
ff. 51r-119v: Asser, Vita Alfredi; with a continuation to 1101; translated by John Stow, dated 1572.
ff. 121r-123v: Aelred of Rievaulx, Vita Sancti Edwardi Regis et Confessoris; translated into English.
ff. 124r: A chronicle entitled ‘Noates taken of Nicholas Trivet [Annales sex Regum Angliæ]’; with a continuation to 1318.
The manuscript contains two later additions:
f. 1*recto: A title-page: ‘Certaine Ancient Chronicles the names of which Are expressed in the page ensuing All written out or transcribed in by John Stowe the Chronciler with his owne hand’; added by Sir Simonds D’Ewes.
f. 1*verso: A table of contents, added by Sir Simonds D’Ewes.

Provenance:
John Stow [Stowe] (b. 1524/5, d. 1605)), chronicler and antiquary: translated and written by him (see Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972), p. 319).
Sir Simonds D’Ewes (b. 1602, d. 1650), 1st baronet, diarist, antiquary, and friend of Sir Robert Cotton (see Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972), p. 131): added a title-page to 1*recto; a table of contents to f. 1*verso; recorded in his catalogues as B.146.
Sir Simonds D’Ewes (d. 1722), 3rd baronet and grandson of the former: inherited and later sold the D’Ewes library to Robert Harley on 4 October 1705 for £450.
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d. 1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
