ff. 2r-24v: The Statutes of the Order of the Garter, beginning ‘The Statutes and ordenaunces of the most noble ordre of Saynte George named the Gartier reformed explaned declared and renewed by the most high most excellent and most puissante Prince Henry theight by the grace of God king of England ffrance and Irelande defendour of the faithe’.
Decoration:
2 full-page coats of arms in colours, silver and gold (ff. 1r and 1v). Medium gold initials in blue and red frames throughout the manuscript.

Provenance:
Robert Dudley (b. 1532/1533, d. 1588), Earl of Leicester, owned from 1559: his arms on f. 1 in his copy of the Statutes of the Order of the Garter (see Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972), p. 139).
Robert Cunningham: donated the manuscript on 15 July 1709, according to an inscription by Edward Harley on f. 1*recto (see Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972), p. 121).
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d. 1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
