ff. 1r-50r: Henrik Jansen Van Barrefelt [Hiël] (b. c. 1520, d. c. 1594), ‘A Short Instruction according to the Being By Hiel’; beginning ‘Loving disciples of the uniforme Spirit of Christ; I Hiel have by the helpe Command and mind of god; pointed out the true uniforme Spirit of Christ unto your Salvation with Letters and Spirit in your hearts; and yee alsoe have the gift of god thereto; that yee have received ye same testimonies for good; and yee have declared to that purpose, that yee would yeeld and Submit your desire and life under the obedience of the uniforme Spirit, which in part is performed, wherewith god hath comforted us for a tym and I hoped yt is Should have Continued Constantly before god and mee’. Another copy is extant in Sloane MS 2608.

? William Smith (b. c. 1550, d. 1618), merchant, traveller, topographer, Rouge Dragon Pursuivant of Arms in Ordinary at the College of Arms, 1597-1618: according to Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972), p. 307.
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d. 1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
